Where is the brake master cylinder located

I have been looking for the brake master cylinder on my 1953 2672. Looking under the dash, a rod goes from the brake pedal through the firewall. Under the hood, there is no sign of the rod. As the car has no brakes when using the brake pedal, I wanted to fill the reservoir to get some braking act...

Initial impressions were promising but upon driving the car the results were the same as before. Soft brake pedal and the wheezing noise is still present.
